TitleType

Enumeration of types of program titles.

Type NameDescription
1GridTitle for a grid cell with 15 characters or less. Creative abbreviations used as needed. Copy may also appear in the grid.
230 characters or lessTitle with 30 characters or less. Creative abbreviations used as needed.
3Grid2Title for a grid cell with 8 characters or less. Creative abbreviations used as needed. Copy will not appear with these titles.
450 characters or lessShortened title with 50 characters or less. Creative abbreviations used as needed. Most often removes internal articles, prepositions, etc. to closely match the Rovi title.
5SortMatches the Rovi title exactly, but in all caps with numerals spelled and without punctuation or leading articles.

This title enables products to create an alphabetical program guide.

Example:

Rovi Title: 7 Days Left...Queen Latifah Goes to Hollywood's Biggest Night

Sort Title: SEVEN DAYS LEFT QUEEN LATIFAH GOES TO HOLLYWOODS BIGGEST NIGHT

6On-ScreenThe exact on-screen title, entered with all symbols, branding, and capitalization conceits. Entered if the Rovi title differs from the actual on-screen title; we sometimes edit the Rovi title for proscribed words or if a product name/brand is a part of the title.

Example:

Rovi Title: The Little Mermaid

On-screen Title: Disney's "The Little Mermaid"

7AliasAlternate title by which a program has been distributed. Some titles are distributed throughout the world under varying names and so have several AKAs (Also Known As) titles. Other available alias title types are 19, 20 and 21.

Example:

Rovi Title: A Christmas Carol

Alias: Scrooge

8Alt1Shortened Rovi Title that retains an acceptable amount of the title so that it can print alongside a listing. Like the 50 character title, but abbreviations are not used.

Example:

Rovi Title: Your Schools, Your Money--Ohio Votes on School Funding

Alt1: Your Schools, Your Money

Note: Use of this title type has lessened since the start of 30- and 50-character titles.

17ParentTitle that links series master titles or other records from the same franchise.

Example: Each season of Survivor has a unique name, and therefore a separate series master. To ensure that these series masters are linked together, we input a parent title of Survivor on all series masters. (We would also input that same parent title if any movies or one-time-only programs are produced and cannot be included in any of the series packages.)

18Adult Scenario If an adult (porn) title is objectionable, we add an adult generic title of adult program to the record. This enables products that are reluctant to print the dirtiest titles to instead use the general adult program title.
19Alias2Another alternate title by which a program has been distributed.
20Alias3Another alternate title by which a program has been distributed.
21Alias4Another alternate title by which a program has been distributed.
22Rovi TitleThe title that will most often print in products. It does not carry a leading article, but tries to reflect the actual on-screen title as closely as possible. Exceptions:
  • Proscribed words are edited (especially in porn titles).
  • Branding is most often removed (as noted in the description for number 6).
  • Leading articles are retained for two-word titles or those that refer to a specific place, time, or people (like "The Civil War").
23Umbrella TitleNot currently used. Was used for a program that is part of a larger grouping of shows with, say, a weeklong title. This title would print along with the Rovi Title appended to it.

For example: if the Discovery Channel shows Shark Feeding Frenzy as part of its yearly Shark Week special, the title would appear as Shark Week: Shark Feeding Frenzy.

24Episode TitleThe exact episode title provided by the distributor, except that proscribed words are edited.

Some distributors rename some episodes upon acquisition. AKA Episode Title types are number 27 and number 28.

25Full Sports SubtitleOnly entered on sports records. Contains a description of the sports event, usually displaying:
  • Team names,
  • Event name,
  • Game number for playoffs or specific rounds, and
  • Year for classic events.
27AKA Episode Title 1 The exact episode title provided by the distributor, except that proscribed words are edited.

This is an alternate episode title from its original production, usually renamed by an acquiring distributor.

28AKA Episode Title 2 The exact episode title provided by the distributor, except that proscribed words are edited.

This is an alternate episode title from its original production, usually renamed by an acquiring distributor.
